District 17 “Imagine Mars” Exhibition

May 18, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

On the heels of the November 2018 flawless landing on the planet Mars of a NASA spacecraft called InSight following a 300-million-mile journey, Community School District 17 will host an Imagine Mars Exhibition, which will spotlight student projects that are the culmination of interdisciplinary projects in schools that focus on designing a yet to be imagined community for 100 people chosen to live on Mars.  This project would integrate science, math, engineering, art, and technology and helps students think about what it means to live and learn in an increasingly complex world.

The goal of the Imagine Mars Exhibition is to encourage reflecting, imagining, discovering, creating, and sharing, as part of our district’s efforts to build community across grades and geographic boundaries.  Every school in our district will be encouraged to participate in our Imagine Mars Exhibition, which can be a single class project or one that involves several classrooms; as a grade level or a school-wide project; as teams working on one aspect of the community or interdisciplinary groups working across subjects to tackle how an entire community will look.

NASA and the National Endowment for the Arts has the following website posing the question: What Will It Take To Live on Marshttps://mars.nasa.gov/imagine/leaders/

Teachers of science, the arts, technology, social studies and other content areas may collaborate with teams of students in or across grades kindergarten through 12 to develop an exhibit that reflects their thinking about what it will take to achieve a livable and life-sustaining community on Mars that is culturally and artistically rich.  Students will delve into some important issues about building a good community that will result in important lessons learned.

District 17’s Imagine Mars Exhibition will be designed to connect with and learn from students from schools in different communities across our geographically diverse district by working toward a common goal and positive future.

We hope that you will consider participating in this very creative and adventurous District 17 initiative.  Below are some resources to inspire and support your project development.
